An understated scheme for a palatial home

The Octagon design team worked passionately on this six bedroom, 14,000 sq ft white stucco beauty, with indulgent living the name of the game. The principal suite offers two ensuite bathrooms and dressing rooms, while the oversized fully fitted bespoke kitchen extends into a family and breakfast room. Copious leisure spaces such as a TV den, games room and fully equipped leisure complex with indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, gym and changing/shower rooms round up this vast home’s facilities, as well as a lift and separate staff suite.

Not only an Octagon design and build, but this award winning project marked the first end-to-end scheme delivered in partnership with the company’s in-house interior design team, Octagon Interiors.

Head of Interiors, Rachel Hall, talks us through a few of the key design features of this palatial home.

“The brief was to deliver a scheme that was understated and classical – with crisp whites against soft neutrals and plenty of texture, not forgetting a handful of truly standout, ‘wow’ features…

“From stolen glances from along the landings to an elegant climb up the staircase, the eye can’t be drawn anywhere beyond the grandiose chandelier cascading across all three floors. Expertly sourced from a Czech Republic lighting company specialising in lighting design and architecture, the 8m design comprising hand-blown glass spheres in smoked and light cognac offers an organic and natural feel belying the immense structural support and specialist skill required to install it.

“From chandeliers to kitchens, and an exciting upgrade added during the development of the kitchen design – a breakfast cabinet, which took the place of one of the double larder units. Inside are three drawers with a worktop and stone shelf, specifically the morning essentials of cereals, teas and coffees.

“The open plan kitchen/dining/living space overlooks the extensive leisure suite. Behind the glass is the swimming pool, with crystal blue water achieved through the use of white and gold tiles, creating a sense of serenity. Sheer curtains adorn the French doors, further softening the space and a unique vinyl taupe wallpaper was added to the columns in the leisure suite, seamlessly integrating the warmer tones in the kitchen/family area that are visible through the glass that divides the two spaces.

“The ideal addition for any family home, a TV den is kitted out with the latest equipment befitting any luxury family home. The client requested a classic-style bookcase that didn’t dominate the room – we designed a bespoke cabinet in a light grey finish, with wallpaper to the back, with LED  lighting illuminating the texture of the wallpaper.

“Heading upstairs to the principal suite, we created a feeling of continuity by continuing to complement the tones of the entranceway chandelier in the design of each room – resulting in the welcoming feel of a 5* hotel room. Texture is key in this room – a velvet headboard surrounding the bed is balanced by a matching feature wall opposite. The bespoke artwork is hand crafted from white and gold porcelain, while lights expertly bounce soft light across the space. The classical chairs were a special request from the client.”
