Best Luxury House in London

30/05/2014

Octagon’s latest magnificent house located in Totteridge, London, N20 was named Best Luxury Home in London at the prestigious Evening Standard New Homes Awards, which took place at the suitably super luxe Dorchester Hotel on Park Lane, London, W1.

Totteridge is a country village with a London postcode, and only a 20 minute Tube journey from Euston station. With an ancient parish church, cricket club, ponds and paddocks, this conservation area is much favoured by sports stars and captains of industry.

This superb award-winning property sits in its own lavishly landscaped 3 acre plot, with 200 metres of frontage accessed by two separate gated entrances. It was built in the Romanesque style, complete with tower, inspired by the Victorian gentleman’s residence that originally stood in the grounds.

Inside, the 15,000 sq. ft. of living space has been decorated and furnished by Rachel Beckett of R Interiors, designer to many media and music moguls, featuring a number of fine period-style details combined with the latest 21st century comforts.

Upon receiving the trophy, Octagon Director Richard Galland commented,

“This is one of the finest homes Octagon has ever had the privilege to design and build, so we are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the outright winner for London’s Best Luxury Home.”

As a truly luxurious and deceptively easy to run house, 48 Totteridge Common is perfect for both grand entertaining and relaxed family living. Starting with a spectacular double height main hall with classic marble floor, where light floods in through full height south-facing windows, playfully reflecting on the specially commissioned Italian chandelier suspended from the first floor ceiling. There is also a passenger lift, which serves all three levels of this exceptional property.

On the ground floor, a broad elegantly panelled corridor leads to the principal rooms, namely drawing, dining and family rooms, library and super-sized kitchen with informal dining area.

No doubt destined to be the family hub, the kitchen has a large island breakfast bar, bespoke painted cabinetry, a hidden walk in pantry, a dumb waiter and an impressive range of built-in Wolf and Gaggenau appliances which should satisfy the most ardent of Master Chefs. For sun worshippers, wide fully retractable glazed doors open onto the garden terrace, whilst safety conscious parents can check children’s activities through a dramatic internal glass wall, which has direct views onto the indoor swimming pool and gym.

The very comprehensive spa and leisure suite consists of a 10 metre pool, steam room and changing room with shower, and is accessed via a dramatic glass ‘bridge’ running over the pool. Adjoining the pool complex is a fully-equipped gymnasium and magnificent games room, kitted out with a purple pool table and selection of retro pinball and video games.

Moving up the grand main staircase to the first floor, where 5 sumptuous bedroom suites await, all with generous runs of custom built fitted wardrobes. Scene stealer is the Master Bedroom Suite, having both a spectacular bathroom clad in exquisite book-matched Calacata marble and a walk-in dressing room lined with polished mahogany cupboards.

A further flight of stairs leads into the top of the tower, the perfect look-out post with three viewing windows and an extended roof space, ideal as an office or studio eyrie.

Above the four car garage is a spacious self-contained two bedroom apartment. Depending on the household, the apartment would make excellent staff accommodation or granny annexe.

If the marble staircase is simply not fast enough, residents can sweep down in the private passenger lift to the lower ground floor, to check out their temperature controlled wine cellar with comfortable tasting area, before settling down to watch the latest movie in the fourteen seater cinema room. Electrically-controlled reclining seats, a giant 10 foot wide screen and the cinema’s own fully-stocked cocktail bar ensure nil interruption before the final credits roll.

Also on this level is a professional catering kitchen. Fitted out with commercial stainless steel appliances and linked to the upper level kitchen by the aforementioned dumb waiter, this is a necessary addition for people who like entertaining on a grand scale.

Outside, the secluded 3 acres of gardens are arranged into three separate areas of lawn and woodland, with extensive wide sheltered terraces bordering the rear of the house.
